Shhh…
I don’t talk much… I don’t listen to music. I don’t even read anything when I wake up. One of the most important parts of my morning routine is sitting in silence. I also like to fall asleep in silence. The quiet of my mind as I begin and end my days allows me to be more introspective. Thinking over my intentions for my day and evaluating my actions for the day help me to continue to renew my mind daily.
“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)
Many of us run from silence. Our days are filled with noise – from work, family and friends, social media, and entertainment. We fill every open space with it. When faced with silence, we find it boring or uncomfortable. We would prefer to fill that space with something.
Silence can force us to face ourselves. It can also reveal God. God’s voice is described by Isaiah as a “still, small voice”. Imagine hearing that voice amidst the chaos of Life. It’s not easy, but you can, if you’re quiet on the inside. Even if your world is noisy, if you aren’t letting that noise in, you can hear it. God’s voice, even in a whisper, drowns out the world’s noise if we are tuned in to His frequency.
Take some time daily to sit in silence. It might sound boring, but if you try it, you’ll realize there is much to be discovered there.
