Evolution
As a Christian, the word “Evolution” as a theme for this year could seem contradictory to my beliefs. Christians believe in creation, not evolution. I fought this word for a while, to be honest. For 2021, the word “Overcome” was one I immediately leaned into, but evolution? I wasn’t sure at first. I tried to find another word, but it kept coming back into my spirit. When I read 2 Peter 1:1-11 I had an aha moment. In my blog post, Trust the Process, this is exactly what I was talking about. One of the Cambridge definitions for evolution is “a gradual process of change and development.”
This dictionary definition, along with scripture, tell me a few things:
I am not in my final form.
My faith has increased as I experienced more of God’s goodness and seen His hand at work in my Life. As a result, I’ve changed. I don’t show up the way I used to show up in the world. I look different. Evolution takes place within the process of transformation that comes with renewing my mind.
This process will take time, so I can’t rush it.
Evolution by definition is a gradual process. Chrissette Michelle said in and interview with Terrell Grice, that “People will rush you to evolve, and evolving takes time.” This word is my reminder not only to foster my development, but to be patient with myself while doing so. I wanted perfection, but lacked patience. James 1:4 tells us to let patience have her perfect work, so that we will be perfect and entire. Patience is a part of the process.
I initiate the process. God completes it.
Jesus, like the gentleman He is, stood at the door of my heart until I let Him in. He didn’t barge in and take over. He wanted a relationship with me. In letting Him in and recognizing His lordship in my Life, I allowed Him to work in me. He’s still working.
What’s your word for 2022?
